Marking milestones in Language, Gender and Sexuality Studies: Easter 2025, Manchester Metropolitan University, UK (2nd May, 2025).
2025 marks two important milestones for the language and gender research community. First, it is 20 years since the British Association of Applied Linguistics’ Language, Gender, and Sexuality Special Interest Group was first established. Second, it marks 10 years since the Palgrave Studies in Language, Gender and Sexuality series began. This one-day event seeks to celebrate these milestones and look ahead to the next 20 years. The keynote speakers at this event will be:
Dr Jane Sunderland, Honorary Reader in Gender and Discourse at the Department of Linguistics and English Language of Lancaster University
Dr Jai Mackenzie, Senior Lecturer in Applied Writing and Humanities at the Faculty of Arts, Society and Professional Studies of Birmingham Newman University
Both Jane and Jai have played pivotal roles in the history of the LGAS SIG, with Jane being one of its co-founders, and Jai being its most recent chair.
In addition to these keynotes, we will be holding an in-person roundtable of authors who have published in the Palgrave Studies in Language, Gender, and Sexuality series. Indicative speakers include:
Professor Allyson Jule, Professor of Education and the Dean of Education, Community, and Human Development at the University of the Fraser Valley, British Columbia, Canada
Professor William Leap, Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at American University and an Affiliate Professor in the Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program at Florida Atlantic University
Dr Linda McLoughlin, Honorary Research Fellow, Liverpool Hope University, UK
During this event, there will be various papers which critically reflect on previous studies, innovate new methodological and theoretical perspectives in language, gender, and sexuality studies, and engage across multiple disciplines. This conference aims to bring together the community of scholars in the field, offering a welcoming and inclusive space.
